Rosehill Black Velour the UK's first EX 96 Ayrshire CowRosehill Black Velour the UK’s first EX 96 Ayrshire Cow
Born on 20 January 2000 Rosehill Black Velour is the first AI daughter of Rosehill Blackthorn to be born at Rosehill home to Colin and Jenny Christopher and family. She began her show career as a calf, winning the Webson Trophy for son. After calving her first at two years and four months she was classified VG85 by the classifier late in lactation.
Her early show career saw her regularly taking second place to her herd mate and half sister Rosehill Blackthorn CiderEX91. By the time of her third calf in 2004, Velour had really started to mature and develop and she won her first Championship at the Royal Cornwall Show. This was to be the first of four consecutive Championships at the Royal Cornwall Show. This record has however been surpassed at Stithians show where she has been Champion for six consecutive shows 2004-2009. June of that year saw her classify at EX93 and he promoted her again in 2005 this time to EX94. 2005 saw her hit the big time with a trip to the Royal show where she won Senior Cow in Milk and the Progeny Pair, while the following year would see her reach the pinnacle of her career when she was crowned Ayrshire Champion at the Royal . This summer would also see the classifier score her EX95 3E and then 2008 would see her scored EX95 4E while in her seventh lactation. In November 2009 in her eighth at a special visit, the classifier scored her EX96 Body, EX97 Dairy Strength, EX97 Legs and Feet ,and EX95 Mammary, to give her an overall score of EX96 5E This was verified by chief classifier John Gribbon
Anyone who has seen Velour at the shows will know what a character she is,, having a strong will and a self opinion that “she knows it all” and this tells you all about this cow. She is the dominant matriarch of the herd, always first into the parlour and to the feed bunker.
She is also a top producer and breeder having given over 70 tonnes of milk and has already bred two VG 2 year old daughters scored 87 and 85 both by Pardner, while she has a yearling daughter by Jurist and a son by Ristourn
Dreams come true for Ann and Lottie at AgriscotDreams come true for Ann and Lottie at Agriscot
If there was ever any doubt that dreams do come true they were quickly dispelled at this year’s Agriscot when 23 year old Ann Laird showing her first ever Ayrshire, Barr Ranger Lottie EX 95, captured not only the Breed Champion but also the Supreme Championship of the show. Ann, one of the most talented young Holstein breeders in the UK, had caused a stir, when along with her grandfather Colin, she had purchased Lottie at the Barr Dispersal only two weeks before for the second top price of 7000gns.Shown in immaculate form and looking everyone of her 95 points, she was described by top Australian judge David Mayo, as an easy winner, and she certainly was a very popular Supreme Champion with the ringside.Reserve Champion in the Ayrshire section went to Jim & Gilmour Lawries’s Brieryside Trimova 25VG86 2y. This beautifully balanced 2nd calf daughter of Nelson was following in the footsteps of her mother who had been Champion heifer at Agriscot. Heifer champion was the West Spittal Regiment Red daughter, Swaites Felicity 6 from William & John Adamson
